Why did milk loving Celts build 4000 forts? // History Documentary
Why did Celts of the British Isles build over 4000 hill forts during the Iron Age? The answer may have something to do with the conflict between those Bronze Age cowboys who maintained traditional pastoralist transhumance lifestyles, and those in the forts who depended more on arable farming. This can also explain why British Celts were the most lactose tolerant people on Earth at that time. In this documentary I visited Barbury Castle in Wiltshire, Castle an Dinas in Cornwall and several other magnificent Iron Age hill forts.

    Generally I think this review / overview is good but there are a few places where the narrator shows the ignorance and/or bias of the creator. One spot is where he says Iceland didn't have forests it most certainly did when the Norse first arrived there it was through their cutting down of trees to use as resources that the island was deforested.

    5:16 Hot boxing’s is spiritual you’ll get so high and if you’re with people you usually don’t get along with let’s say a rival tribe in ancient times it can help the leaders talk through difficulties and differences to come to a conclusion that might sound stupid but they are high and understanding and laughing with each other can make it seem perfect ideas. That’s what I think cannabis was used for by ancient people. Unless they had real hatred for each other it would work to build relationships with new people. Also why a shaman was important because they got the weed lmao

    My blue eyes are much more at ease on overcast days and in low light. Full sun is difficult for me and I don't know how I went so long without sunglasses when I was younger. I associate my blue eyes positively with my race/clan,/group, so when I hear the sentiment that blue eyes are creepy, I wonder if similar feelings about other groups would sound less unfair or even racist. Is tight, curly black hair creepy? What about freckles or epicanthal eye folds?

    For a there to be a 'Drowned God' there needs to be a drowning but if you take a look at the historical descriptions of the custom none of them end in the 'Earl' being thrown into the sea. The earliest from Rev Tugwell (1863) simply says 'About night-fall the procession reaches the sea'. What they do there we aren't told but given the level of drink apparently consumed enroute it won't have been a dignified ceremony. Other descriptions from the mid 1800's note that the procession doesn't reach the sea at all - the day ending in drunkeness in the centre of the village. It would appear then that the 'drowning' of the Earl is part of the 1970's reconstruction of the custom - a piece of theatricality to end proceedings. And, (as pointed out elsewhere) with the fact that the hobby horse is late medieval in origin and in this case might have been moved from Christmas, the whole idea of The Hunting the Earl of Rone having some kind of pagan ritual origins is a bit of a none starter.

    I believe genetics work like this. If there are two dominants that allows a recessive to come through so if an ancestor did have relations with a blue-eyed person that baby would come out with brown eyes. However if that brown-eyed baby had relations with another brown eyed person, it is likely that at least one of their children would have blue eyes.

    Survive the Jive once again in a needless vain effort to defend the undefendable Elgin butchery of the Parthenon. The fact that the Parthenon was owned by Ottoman occupiers does not mean it would not be theft if Ottomans had given him the "go-ahead" even in contract. But the truth that Greeks (as well as British - e.g. Lord Byron was well aware) know all along for 2 centuries, finally was also admitted by Turks themselves with Turkish historians, academics and state representatives clarifying that the hypothetical "Ottoman bureaucracy permit" to Elgin to take whatever he wanted from the Parthenon was never given by Ottomans, such a permit does not exist and never existed but only in the minds of the British who somehow needed to "ratify legally" the theft. Lord Elgin bribed Ottomans not to give any permit but to not bother him. Then he tried to bribe Greek workers to do the job but even if he paid double, then tripling then quadrupling the salaries, the impoverished-at-near-famine-level Greeks of Attica refused to do such a crime. Greeks, be it illiterate at the time, had a visceral undersanding of their history and valued the "ruins" more than their life. So much that Elgin eventually had to seek workers among criminals and pay them exhorbitant salaries and guard the whole criminal process with guns - i.e. what the French did when taking Aphrodite of Melos against the will of the local Melians (there was even a street fight as the French took out their guns to push back the Greek crowd resisting them). Elgin went on to butcher the Parthenon chopping up whatever he wanted and causing untold destruction to which Lord Byron reacted in despair claiming that not even Morosini's canon caused as much damage as Elgin and that Elgin is the disgrace of English civilization. To understand how the illiterate Greeks respected their ancient monuments, during the 1821 revolution, the Greek rebels had encircled Athens, no more than a village back then. The Ottomans had fortified themselves in the Acropolis. Since their ammo was running low, they started breaking the temple's columns to get the lead joints from within and turn them into bullets. When the Greeks realised this, they stopped the siege, they pleaded them to stop breaking the columns and in exchange they provided them with ample bullets, bullets that were then be used to kill Greeks (!), so as to not need to damage the antiquities. It is very telling that some modern Brit would want to defend the undefendable actions of Elgin. It is one thing to state that "these were different times and culture was different and that butchering ancient monuments was the norm", which is indeed understandable and it is another to really back up the crime of Elgin promoting the 2-centuries-old lie that "he had a permit, he didn't steal". No, he didn't have a permit, even modern Turks verify that Elgin had no permit and that he was a thief.

    • @user-ex6nd8dq8w
      @user-ex6nd8dq8w 12 часов назад

      @@Survivethejive I added it as a side story but this is not the main point. The main point is that Elgin went in like a common thug. He had no official authorisation, he bribed people and failing to find workers even among the starving poor local Greeks even if he paid 4 times the normal salary back then, he ultimately had to pay exorbitant salaries to people from criminal backgrounds to do his butchery. The next story was added to explain how locals saw their heritage and dispel the disgusting myth that "none cared". Sure Ottomans themselves did not care much but, as the Turks themselves today openly state, there is absolutely nothing in their records official or indirect ones to show that Elgin had any valid authorization to do what he did. There is nothing that can alleviate the label theft in what Elgin did, unless you do believe that I can come and chop off Big Ben at will and if none reacts at that very, moment (because I hired a bunch of armed criminals) that makes it somehow a non-theft. You know, police does nothing about burglaries but that does not make burglars non-thieves.

    The 'blue eyes' piercing look has more to do with brown eyes' darkness making the pupils' look larger than they are, whereas the blue eyes you can clearly see the pupil size. Pupil reaction is one of the signs of arousal and interest, a small pupil is instinctively viewed as cold and distant, while large ones as intimate and warm. Sexual selection is sufficient criteria for blue eyes to exist as a regular trait, you don't need another reason but its interesting that there might be.

    Something interesting I've noticed with these Indo-European myths and cultures is how drastically different they are from Semetic peoples. The verse "he who hangs on a tree is cursed" evoke Odin on the World Tree, and it's as if the Semetic peoples knew of these myths and despised them. Yet Jesus "hangs on a tree" and becomes cursed himself (only to cleanse it later). It's such a a strange union of very different cultures.
